An Electric Air Supply Long Tube Respirator, often referred to as a “Supplied-Air Respirator” (SAR) or “Hose Mask,” is a type of respiratory protective device that provides clean, breathable air to a single user (or multiple users in some models) from a source outside of the contaminated area.
How It Works:
Unlike a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which carries its own compressed air cylinder, a long tube respirator uses a continuous air supply from a stationary source. The “electric” part of the name indicates that this air is delivered by an electric blower or fan, rather than a passive, constant flow system.
The system typically consists of:
- Air Blower/Pump: An electric-powered blower draws in clean air from a safe, uncontaminated area. This is the “electric air supply.”
- Long Tube (Hose): A long, flexible hose connects the air blower to the user’s face mask. The length of the tube can vary, with some models offering up to 20 or 30 meters, allowing the user to work a considerable distance from the air source.
- Face Mask/Hood: The user wears a full-face mask or a hood that fits securely over the head. This component receives the clean air from the hose and creates a positive pressure environment, preventing contaminants from entering the breathing zone.
Key Features and Benefits:
- Unlimited Air Supply: As long as the electric blower has power and is drawing from a clean air source, the user has a continuous supply of breathable air. This makes it ideal for long-duration tasks in hazardous environments.
- Lightweight: Since the user is not carrying a heavy air cylinder, the system is much lighter and less physically strenuous than an SCBA.
- High Protection: It offers a high level of protection, as the positive pressure within the mask prevents the ingress of harmful gases, vapors, and dust.
- Versatile: It can be used in a wide range of industrial applications where there is a risk of harmful gases or oxygen deficiency, such as in confined spaces, welding, painting, and chemical handling.
- No Risk of Running Out of Air: Unlike an SCBA with a limited air supply, a supplied-air respirator eliminates the risk of running out of air during an extended task
